The Solar Decathlon Competition is hosted and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.The first competition convened on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in 2002, and the competition has run biennially since 2003. The next competition will be in the fall of 2009. Student-let teams at twenty different universities will develop 800 square-foot solar-powered homes that excel in: • Architecture• Engineering• Livability• Comfort The houses will collect solar energy for use in:• Space Heating and Cooling • Water Heating • Lights • Appliances The Decathlon is made up of ten competitions, each evaluating a different aspect of the project:• Architecture • Market Viability • Engineering • Lighting Design • Communications • Comfort Zone • Hot Water • Appliances • Home Entertainment • Energy Balance
